Spotify has officially rolled out its long-awaited Friends Listening Activity feature to mobile devices, allowing users to see what music their friends are listening to in real time directly from the Spotify app on iOS and Android. Until now, this capability was only available on the desktop version, where millions of users relied on the sidebar to explore friends’ musical tastes. Bringing it to mobile marks one of Spotify’s biggest social-focused upgrades in recent years.
For a long time, mobile users requested the same social experience desktop users enjoyed. Now, Spotify is finally delivering. With the new update, users can open the app and view a dedicated section that shows either the song their friends are currently streaming or the most recent track they listened to if they’re not actively playing music at that moment.
The feature is designed to enhance music discovery, letting people explore new artists, playlists, and genres simply by following what their friends are enjoying in real time.
Spotify emphasizes that Listening Activity is completely optional. Users must manually enable it in the app’s Privacy & Social settings before their listening information becomes visible to friends. For added control, Spotify continues to offer Private Sessions, allowing users to temporarily hide their listening history whenever they choose.
Only users you’re connected with on Spotify can see your activity, ensuring that the feature remains social but still personal and secure.
Listening Activity doesn’t just display songs; it encourages interaction. When users tap on a friend’s currently playing track, they can:
This makes the experience far more engaging than passive viewing, transforming it into a real-time interaction space inside Spotify.
Alongside Listening Activity, Spotify has also introduced Request to Jam, a new social listening feature that allows users to join synchronized music sessions with friends. Premium subscribers can invite others to a shared listening experience where playback is synced, playlists can be edited collaboratively, and music recommendations are personalized for everyone involved.
Free users can still participate if invited, making it an inclusive experience designed to replicate the feeling of listening together in the same room — even when friends are far apart.
The feature is currently rolling out across supported regions and is gradually becoming available to users worldwide. As updates continue, more users will see the feature appear in their apps over the coming weeks.
With this update, Spotify strengthens its identity as not just a music streaming platform, but a social music ecosystem. The company continues moving toward a vision where streaming is not just personal entertainment but a shared activity — something users experience together rather than alone.
By blending music discovery, real-time interaction, and social connectivity, Spotify is redefining how listeners connect with both music and each other.
